Catch up with the Gossip (and let us know what you’ve heard!)

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Here on the weekly Chicks Climbing gossip report you can catch up on all of the great gossip (articles, videos, and other assorted cool stuff) we talked about last week at Chicks Climbing! Last week went so fast we only posted one feature on the blog, but it was a good one – it was by Girly Guide Caroline George who told the story of a trip she made with her mother this summer to the top of the Cosmiques Ridge in Chamonix. Caroline’s mother, Martine, pushed the boundaries of female climbers in her youth, and now at the age of 65 (and with really bad knees), totally rocked out the highest 5.13 crack in the world and continues to be a role model for Caroline. It’s a really great story so if you didn’t catch it last week, I encourage you to do so here.

This week we’re off to Devil’s Lake! We’ve got a lot going on including some co-ed skills clinics this Saturday and Sunday, a slide show from the one and only Kitty Calhoun on Sunday night at the University of Wisconsin (with 50 passes from Boulders Rock Gym in Madison and some Sterling Ropes to give away) before the big event – the Chicks Rock! intensive climbing clinic Sept. 13-16!

All of the other articles we linked to this past week through either the Chicks Climbing Twitter account, or on the Chicks Climbing Facebook fan page (and some on both!).

We provide this wrap-up because we come across a TON of great resources each week, but understand that not everyone is online all the time, or even on both (or either) of these social media platforms. So you can check here each and every week for the latest and greatest in Clicks Climbing resources here on the blog.

However, we know WE may have also missed some cool stuff this week, so if there is something of interest we missed that you came across this week please, let us know so we can share with everyone else!

Gossip Report <– It’s a big one, which means it’s full of good stuff!

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Here on the weekly Chicks Climbing gossip report you can catch up on all of the great gossip (articles, videos, and other assorted cool stuff) we talked about last week at Chicks Climbing! We had a busy blog last week at Chicks Climbing that started off with the announcement of our contest to give away two one-day co-ed skills clinic giveaways in Devil’s Lake, Wisconsin, Sept. 11 & 12! We want you to get creative in this contest, and are asking for interested entrants to submit a photo of an artistic creation you design, create, find or capture with some climbing related piece(s) of gear on our Facebook page. Two winners will be selected, and each will receive a one-day pass to use at the skills clinic! Check out the full details here.

In other Devil’s Lake related news last week, we announced that we are offering special pricing for a limited time on the full Chicks Rock! women’s intensive clinic Sept. 13-16 for anyone that signs up with a buddy. If a pair of friends signs up together, they will each save $100 on the cost of the clinic! Check out the full details on this special buddy package (good through Aug. 30) here! (And make sure to tell your girlfriends!)

Last week we also posted some feedback from Chicks alumna Beth Elliott, who has been to both Chicks with Picks and Chicks Rock! We talked to Beth earlier this summer on her Chicks Rock! experience this past spring in Red Rocks, and posted her responses to our questions word-for-word. Look for more feedback from another recent Chicks Rock! participant, Francisca Jofre to come later this week.

Finally, we had a guest blog post from Girly Guide Caroline George, who told us all about her recent week giving technical alpine instruction in the Alps. Caroline has had a very BUSY summer guiding in Europe so we have lots more good stuff from her coming this week as well!

Gossip Report: Last week’s goodies and what we’re working on!

Anne Hughes leading Salsa Lisa at Chicks Complete 2010.

Here on the weekly Chicks Climbing gossip report you can catch up on all of the great gossip (articles, videos, and other assorted cool stuff) we talked about last week at Chicks Climbing! Just yesterday we announced that Genevieve Hathaway is the winner of our Girly Gathering giveaway! Congratulations to her, and our heartfelt thanks to all the inspiring ladies that entered. All of the entries can be seen (and should be because there are some WONDERFUL stories there) on our Facebook page. As the winner, Genevieve will be coming out to one of our upcoming Girly Gathering clinics in either the Keene Valley in the beautiful Adirondacks of upstate New York, or the epic New River Gorge in West Virginia. The Dacks gathering is happening in less than two weeks, and we’ve got a cutoff date for signups of July 23! So, please make sure you let us know if you are interested in joining us later this month by the end of the week!

Overall, it’s been a busy week at Chicks, getting ready for our Girly Gatherings and the upcoming Outdoor Retailer show where we hope to find some great sponsors for both our rock and ice climbing clinics for the 2010-2011 season. We do have some good content in the works for the blog, including an interview with one of the most infamous Chicks alumna Anne Hughes conducted by the super-motivated friend of Chicks (and fellow alumna) Sarah Goldman, as well as an update from Girly Guide Angela Hawse, so stay tuned! Finally, one other tidbit of exciting Chicks news is that now anyone can sign up for our monthly newsletter, so if you haven’t been to a Chicks clinic but want to get in on all the goods (like our advance announcements on exciting clinic deals and details), make sure you get all the beta by signing up directly on our Web site (newsletter is monthly).

All of the other articles we linked to this past week through either the Chicks Climbing Twitter account, or on the Chicks Climbing Facebook fan page (and some on both!).

Is there something of interest we missed that you came across this week? Please, let us know so we can share with everyone else!

Chicks Rock!

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

We have officially launched our new Chicks Rock! women’s rock climbing program starting this September in Devils Lake, WI and October in Red Rocks, NV. See web site for details and dates.

Chicks Rock!“Chicks” has become well known for more than just climbing – our women become really good climbers, learn self-reliance and confidence that funnels into everyday life. We not only climb hard all day, we gather at night for dinners, discussions and slideshows. Chicks is as much about community as it is about climbing! We have created THE place for women to network, make friends and find climbing partners.

Our clinics have the reputation of being well-organized and they run like clockwork – this enables you to get more out of the experience than you ever imagined. Best of all, you get to climb with our famous Girly Guides. We welcome beginner to advanced rock climbers, with 5 different levels you can choose from. Chicks Rock will enable you to pursue your passion of rock climbing and take it to the next level in a super safe, supportive, fun atmosphere.

End of the Season

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Did that really just happen?  The ten-year anniversary of Chicks with Picks womens ice climbing has come and gone. Yup, time flies when you are having fun kicking axe and kicking butt! Notice that no one has tried to replicate this program but then again, why would they? Who knew that womens ice climbing would take off and gain such momentum since we hosted our first clinic in 1999 with 18 gals.  Women are smart – if you look at the odds, ice climbing is a great way to meet guys and lesbians, for that matter. Better than Match.com, Fitness Singles or E-Harmony for hooking up that like-minded, adventurous, soul mate to share gear with.

Getting to the top of an ice climb

Celebrate

In 2009, we offered our three standard clinics with a 4-to-1 ratio:  The Totally Chick, The Complete Chicks & The Sampler held court in the Ouray Ice Park and then in February, we introduced the first Annual Betty Ice Ball: a women’s festival of ice. Forty-four women gathered for half-day clinics with a 6-to-1 ratio, group dinners, slideshows, auctions and dancing to our local band “Fall Baby” – whoa some match making was going on that night! Women loved The Betty Ball and being able to attend Chicks with Picks at a more affordable price and we all know they will be back for more!
