ROCKtober Gossip Report No. 1

Monday, October 1st, 2012

Here on the Chicks Climbing Gossip Report you can catch up on all of the great gossip (articles, videos, and other assorted cool stuff) we talked about over the past week at Chicks Climbing. Just a head’s up that there will be NO Gossip Report next week since this Chickadee is heading out to the Creek for a crack fix, so with limited service out there I don’t expect to be able to keep up on all the happenings. But, I will do my best to catch up upon my return.

What a fun time we had at our New River Gorge Girly Gathering!

Also coming up this weekend is our Keene Valley Girly Gathering, which will also feature a showing of Reel Rock 7 on Saturday night. We have seen some amazing pictures from the Adirondacks the past few days, and are so psyched to head up and ROCK out!

After that, we just have one more climbing clinic – our annual fall pilgrimage to Red Rock! We will be climbing there Oct. 18-21 (with an optional multi-pitch day Oct. 22) and still have space available if you are interested in joining us! Also at Red Rock this go-around, we are introducing the option to stay at the Chicks Chalet – a house we are renting that also comes with a cook! Check out all the details on that new lodging option here. If you are interested in joining us please contact us ASAP with any questions! (info(at)chickswithpicks.net).

Did you get the September newsletter in your e-mail this weekend? If not, check it out here and then GO to the Chicks website and sign up for the newsletter so you never miss one again :-)

Last week on the blog I finally started my Bugaboos trip report with a recap of our first day climbing up the Kain Route on Bugaboo Spire. If you missed it, check it out (and all the pretty granite pictures) here!

Did you know we are looking for some companies to support our Chicks Climbing Scholarship program? It is a great opportunity to not only get a deserving woman out to a Chicks clinic who could not otherwise afford it, but also provides lots of promotional benefits for companies that take advantage. Here is where you can check out all the details and contact us at info(at) chickswithpicks.net if you’re interested!

And, for those of you who are already in an ice climbing state of mind (and who isn’t?!?!), please check out the schedule for our 2013 Chicks with Picks clinics! It’s never too soon to get it on your calendar!

Do you want to stay more up-to-date on the climbing news during the week? We talk about most all of these on our Twitter feed here, but also post many on Pinterest, a select few on Facebook as well as Google+. We love connecting with Chicks online, so let us know who you are – and where – and we will make sure to find you!

Did we miss any cool stuff this week in our Gossip Report?  Let us know in the comments section if you’ve got a link to some climbing-related goodies so we can share with everyone else!

First Gossip Report of SENDtember!

Tuesday, September 4th, 2012

Here on the Chicks Climbing Gossip Report you can catch up on all of the great gossip (articles, videos, and other assorted cool stuff) we talked about over the past week at Chicks Climbing.

Thank you for your patience in our August absence! I had a fantastic trip to climb in the Bugaboos (trip report(s) to come soon (once I figure out how to spew all the fun I had into a digestible written form)). The Head Chick is still off galavanting in the south of France, but we are still taking registration for our upcoming Chicks Rock! clinics, as we are ramping up for a fall of fun! In just a few weeks we will be at the Chicks Rock! Girly Gathering in the New River Gorge, Sept. 21-23 (2 days climbing) before we head up north for our Chicks Rock! Girly Gathering in the Keene Valley (Adirondacks), Oct. 5-8  which features 3 days of climbing and a showing of Reel Rock 7 Saturday night!). Finally, we are closing out the rock season in the desert at Chicks Rock! Red Rock, Nevada Oct. 18-21 (with an optional multi-pitch day Oct. 22) and are staying in the Chicks Chalet (which you can, too!) check out all the details here.

And, for those of you who are already in an ice climbing state of mind, please check out the schedule for our 2013 Chicks with Picks clinics! It’s never too soon to get it on your calendar!

Last week we made the official announcement of the Reel Rock 7 showing that is taking place in the Keene Valley Saturday, Oct. 6 thanks to our friends at the Mountaineer. Check out those details here.

We also posted a lovely testimony from Chicks Rock! alumna Eva, who climbed with us in Devil’s Lake this summer. She had a lovely way of comparing her approach to obstacles in climbing with those encountered in real life which she put into words and you can read all about here.

Do you want to stay more up-to-date on the climbing news during the week? We talk about most all of these on our Twitter feed here, but also post many on Pinterest, a select few on Facebook as well as Google+. Last Gossip Report for August!

Monday, August 13th, 2012

Here on the Chicks Climbing Gossip Report you can catch up on all of the great gossip (articles, videos, and other assorted cool stuff) we talked about over the past week at Chicks Climbing. Just a head’s up that this is the last Gossip Report for the month of August. Us Chickeroos are off to vacay-land! The Head Chick is going to be making the rounds in Europe while I hit up the Bugaboos for the first time. Sooo…sorry about that but you know we need to get some play in, too! ;-)

We will still be taking registrations for our upcoming clinics though, and for those of you psyched to climb with Chicks this rock season we still have THREE more clinics you can join us at:
- Chicks Rock! Girly Gathering New River Gorge, Sept. 21-23 (2 days climbing)
Chicks Rock! Girly Gathering Keene Valley (Adirondacks), Oct. 5-8 (3 days climbing)
- Chicks Rock! Red Rock, Nevada Oct. 18-21 (with optional multi-pitch day Oct. 22)
We are really excited about two upcoming announcements for our rock clinics we hope to be making this week. One involving a VERY cool event that synchs perfectly with our Adirondacks clinic and the second is a new ‘camp’ arrangement for Red Rock. Stay tuned!!! We are just flushing out final details and hope to get all of the news out this week before we leave!

For those of you who are already in an ice climbing state of mind, please check out the schedule for our 2013 Chicks with Picks clinics! It’s never too soon to get it on your calendar!

Alrighty, now on to the good stuff :-) We wrote a blog about some of the awesome sleeping bags our sponsors at Marmot make (which will be en route to the Bugs shortly as well) but read for yourself how great they are here.

We also posted a video made by the folks at Sierra Trading Post with some great instructions on how to CARE for that precious sleeping bag that keeps you nice and warm at night. If you missed it on Friday you can check it out here.

A fun international Chicks sighting – in Chamonix! Alumnae Amy & Cheryl climb with Girly Guide Caroline George in her (amazing) backyard. Our clinics are a great place to meet fellow climber Chicks for these kinds of trips!

Speaking of Chicks events, we are thrilled to announce our 2013 Chicks with Picks ice climbing clinic dates! So check out your calendar and pencil us in, we have four different clinics to choose from, including the “Graduate” which is *just* after the Ouray Ice Fest. Check out the complete lineup here.

Speaking of Chicks with Picks 2013, we had another big announcement last week which is that Pamela Pack, offwidth climber extraordinaire, will be giving the featured slide show presentation at our Jan. 18 auction fundraiser event! Learn more about the badass Pamela here.

Last week we also published a blog to introduce you to our awesome sponsors at Omega Pacific & their awesome line of quickdraws. If you have never checked them out, please do so. Your rack & wallet will thank you :-)

We have a new partner search happening in our “Chicks Chat” section – Debra K in Flagstaff is looking for a partner. Do you know someone (or are you someone) that is interested? Check out the discussion here!

A reminder that if you make or sell clothing and/or gear that is of interest to women climbers, you can link to it through the Chicks website for increased visibility here in our “Go Shopping” section. Please contact us at info(@)chickswithpicks.net if you are interested in getting your gear featured here!

And, because we are extra proud we are keeping this in the rotation for one more week: Chicks made the Wall Street Journal last weekend in a piece about women looking for “un-girly” weekend trips. Check it out here! (Devil’s Lake is the featured clinic here!)

Also, don’t forget to check us out on Pinterest, where we are archiving many of the cool articles we link to. But be warned, it’s a total time suck! Read all the discount details here and don’t delay in signing up!

Chicks made the Wall Street Journal this weekend in a piece about women looking for “un-girly” weekend trips. Check it out here!

We also had an international Chicks sighting to report last week as alumnae Amy Jurries & Cheryl Wallace climbed with Girly Guide Caroline George in Chamonix! http://yfrog.com/oce5wygj

Last week we put the focus of our sponsor spotlight on our amazing title sponsors at Marmot, who have been steadfastly supporting our programs from the get-go! If you didn’t know, they have some really awesome DriClime technology that will keep you comfortable in a variety of conditions – read all about it here!

Finally, we had a lovely post from the Head Chick about how we are creatures of habit by our very nature, which can lead us to some (unfortunate) unhealthy ones. She gives advice on how to break out of these unhealthy habits here.

Holly Mauro at Bridal Veil Falls. Photo by Carolyn Riccardi.

Here on the Chicks Climbing Gossip Report you can catch up on all of the great gossip (articles, videos, and other assorted cool stuff) we talked about over the past week at Chicks Climbing.

We had some sad news to report last week, Chicks alumna Holly Mauro, a true ambassador of our Chicks with Picks ice climbing programs passed away at the young age of 32. Fellow alumna Carolyn Riccardi wrote a lovely tribute to her which we posted here. Carolyn is also helping to organize a memorial for Holly, which will be taking place in the Gunks of upstate New York this Saturday, April 14. All are invited – for details please send a message to Carolyn via FB here.

The good (and big!) news from Chicks this week is that because we still have space available, our upcoming (and inaugural) Indian Creek trip is now open to any women rock climbers, not just Chicks alumnae! However, you do need to be able to follow a 5.9 on top rope. This three-day clinic focuses on intensive crack climbing April 27-30, with an optional multi-pitch day May 1. Check out all the details here, and contact us ASAP if you want to sign up!

Our March newsletter also came out recently – did you get it in your inbox? If not, you can check it out here, and then sign up on the Chicks website to get it delivered safe and sound from now on ;)

We also posted a fantastic trip report from Kitty Calhoun who traveled with fellow Girly Guide Dawn Glanc and their spouses Jay Smith and Patrick Ormand to put up new lines in Iceland. If you haven’t read it yet you can check it out here.

We have officially swapped our puffy coats for tank tops since it is rock climbing season, and are psyched to have Sterling Rope back on board as a sponsor for our Chicks Rock! programs. Read about why we <3 Sterling Rope here.

Have you checked out “Chicks Chat” section of the website yet? We got some great feedback from Chicks alumna Annie Hughes on how to make lead progress, check out her words of wisdom here.

Don’t forget to check us out on Pinterest, where we are archiving many of the cool articles we link to. But be warned, it’s a total time suck! If you are on it too, hit us up with your link so we can follow all of our fellow climber Chicks! You can find us here: http://pinterest.com/chicksclimbing/

Spring has sprung & our Chicks are ‘Rockin!’

Gotta love a Chicks Climbing's smile! Photo by Dawn Glanc.

Here on the Chicks Climbing Gossip Report you can catch up on all of the great gossip (articles, videos, and other assorted cool stuff) we talked about over the past week at Chicks Climbing. Our gals at Red Rock have been climbing hard all weekend; we are psyched about how far they have come in such a short period of time! We will get pictures up as soon as we can, but since the Social Media Chick is going to go ice climbing (woohoo!) in Canada this week, you will see them in early April (which is when the next gossip report will be too – about a week behind).

Alumnae – don’t forget, we’ve got a special treat for you, the Indian Creek Alumnae Invitational which includes three days of intensive crack climbing clinics April 27-30, with an optional multi-pitch day May 1. Hurry to sign up for this one though, space is very limited!

Have you checked out “Chicks Chat” section of the website yet? This week Sally gave some good advice to Climbing Betty on making progress with her lead grades – do you have anything to offer? http://bit.ly/GIa9IA See what else Chicks are talking about on our forums here and don’t be shy, we want to hear from you!

Last week on the blog we helped some friends of Chicks get the word out about the DVD release of “A Life Ascending” – read all about this inspirational film here.

We also posted a gear review of the Marmot Ama Dablam jacket (which will be put to good use again this upcoming week!) But, you can check out the review if you missed it last week here.
