TRAINING FOR ICE CLIMBING:
IN CLOSING

I’d like to address some specific training concepts that may have been overheard!

Calf preparation: do a lot of calf raises – how about getting on the step mill for 30 minutes, add a small pack if you have the fitness. Not only will your feet and calves get stronger you will get the CV benefits as well.  If not the Step mill, walk up hill outside with a small pack, same benefits, and not nearly as boring as doing loads of calf raises.

Pull-ups – yes it’s great if you can do them, if not do not skip the training, like I mentioned before use a weight assisted pull up machine, you can use exercise bands hooked to the pull up bar like a stirrup and step into it to assist you up.

Hangs – no dice on the pull-up? hang and try top hold your body weight, time your efforts.  See how quickly you can gain endurance, this will help tremendously for ice climbing and resting while climbing.

Tools – if you own tools and want to train using them you can certainly hook them over things (sturdy things) and practice hanging for time or doing pull ups on them, this will begin to train strength into the hands and arms in the proper position for ice climbing.

I am adding pictures of some of the exercises and stretches in case my definitions do not make sense or if you are unfamiliar with the terminology.  However, as always, if you are unsure seek the advice of a professional. Do not feel stupid asking questions, trainers love to talk training and help (it is their job).

And always consult with a physician if you have any injuries or health concerns that may limit your ability to train in any capacity.
